How I got into Digital Marketing by screaming at people. A true story.

So. All careers start somewhere, right?

My dive into digital marketing started around 2007 when I started a heavy metal band.

I didn’t know how to play any instruments. But thought I’d give screaming into a microphone a go.

It turns out that I was pretty good at it. (Self-assessment. Very debatable).

A band is like a small business. You have a whole bunch of people you need to coordinate to make something magical happen.

While creating good music is the first step in gaining some level of popularity.

Marketing and business management is the lions share of work in a band. Especially when you ’niche’ down. Heavy Metal is a polarising musical style that most people think is weird.

“Jay, I don’t even understand what you’re saying”. Oooooo K then.

I loved performing. I loved making music. But most of all I loved promoting the band.

Without the band, I wouldn’t have had a need to learn about all things digital marketing. From building websites, mailing lists, and EDMs. To SEO, social media marketing, creating videos, networking and event management. There is so much involved.
