Ok. So we didn’t really end up in Byron Bay.

My family landed somewhere about 30 mins away in a town called Alstonville.

Initially, when we first moved to the Northern Rivers region we were keen to be somewhere in the Byron Shire. Whether it was actually in Byron Bay or surrounding towns like Mullumbimby, Bangalow or Brunswick Heads.

Unfortunately, not everything always goes to plan. Plus it’s become a rather expensive area to both buy or rent. For perspective, my family comes from inner-city Melbourne, one of the priciest towns in Australia, let alone the world. So that’s saying something about the real estate affordability of the area.

We fell in love with the area about 9 years ago on a holiday with friends. Since that time we had always talked about living here one day. So at the start of 2021, we packed up our things and took the drive north to start a new chapter of our lives in the region.

The evolving reputation of Byron Bay

I’m amazed that these people even have their own TV show called Byron Baes. Which is the epitome of thoughtless and gross television. It must appeal to some people, I guess?

I gave the first 5 mins a watch and was mortified by these crazy people. I’ve personally never seen any of these Insta famous folk in my travels.

I should note that coming from Melbourne, makes me a great judge of pretentious wankers. It’s a common occurrence there and one of the reasons I wanted to leave in the first place.

So how has Byron Bay changed my life?

Many people in their life manage to experience a move away from their homes for a short period of their life. Many of these head overseas. For us. We decided…
